Hawkins H.S. SHPE Jr. Chapter
Publicity and Comms.
SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize their fullest potential and impacts the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.
To conquer the obstacles faced by Latino/a STEM students in high school through the advancement of an organization that empowers, motivates, and inspires.
SHPE’s vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
To stand as a presence that is admired for its development of Latino/a students as influencers and leaders at Augustus F Hawkins High School and surrounding community in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
To provide Hawkins SHPE Jr. members with exposure to industry and university representatives, alumni, and resources to develop professionally throughout their high school experience at Hawkins High School and better prepare them for STEM careers and college. This will be accomplished through guest speakers, conferences, JPL Invention Challenge, field trips and networking events. Success will be measured through college acceptance rates, scholarships and club participation.
To encourage and support academic excellence among Hawkins - SHPE Jr. members. This will be encouraged through exposure to campus, off campus and club academic resources, peer mentoring and tutoring, award recognition, and preparation for college. Success rates will be measured through GPA standing, school and club recognition rates, increased student membership, college application and acceptance rates and participate in MESA activities.
To help establish strong relationships among members of the Hawkins SHPE Jr. chapter in order to foster a network of support where members will benefit from peer exposure and resources. Events will mainly be informal, located on and off-campus, and will range from encouraging group interaction at meetings to group outings. Success will be measured through meeting and event attendance, and membership retention rates.
To provide guidance and mentoring to underrepresented students in grades K—12 at Hawkins High School and local community schools. This year, our community outreach will take the form of Noche de Ciencias at Hawkins H.S., community outreach at John Muir Middle School and surrounding elementary schools, JPL Invention Challenge, Weird Science Wednesdays and Noche de Sueños. Success will be measured through college acceptance and attendance rates as well as increased interest in science, math and engineering.
